The short answer: Ripe papaya — yes, in moderate amounts. Unripe / green papaya — no. The two have very different safety profiles. Unripe papaya contains latex and high concentrations of the enzyme papain, which animal studies have linked to uterine contractions and pregnancy loss. Fully ripe papaya has negligible latex and is widely considered safe in pregnancy.

Why unripe papaya is the concern
