DayQuil in pregnancy: how to think about it

DailyMed labels show DayQuil Cold and Flu formulas can include acetaminophen, dextromethorphan and phenylephrine, and labels tell pregnant or breastfeeding users to ask a health professional before use. • Call your pregnancy clinician promptly if flu is possible, fever persists, symptoms are worsening, or you have shortness of breath, chest pain, dehydration or a high-risk pregnancy condition.

DayQuil: what to avoid or double-check

• Avoid choosing DayQuil by brand name alone because formulas and store-brand copies can differ.
• Avoid multi-symptom products unless every active ingredient has been checked for your pregnancy, trimester, symptoms and medical history.
• Avoid oral decongestants such as phenylephrine or pseudoephedrine if you have high blood pressure, preeclampsia risk, heart disease, thyroid disease, glaucoma or stimulant interactions unless approved.
• Avoid using DayQuil symptom relief as a substitute for care when flu, COVID, asthma flare, pneumonia, persistent fever or dehydration is possible.
